What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read?

I’m a big fan of scary books. I love a good bit of horror; my shelves are stacked with ghost stories, classic gothic novels, crime stories, body horror, supernatural, dystopian, apocalyptic…

I love Woman in Black, World War Z, Frankenstein, String of Pearls, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, HorrorStor, and The Mountains of Madness all for different reasons, but the scariest book I own is a complex novel about a documentary about weird architecture with footnotes about Ancient Greek legends, that sometimes you have to read upside down (and I should have bought the full colour edition, but more fool me). It’s House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski, it’s genuinely terrifying, and I don’t want to tell you more about it because it’s a book you really have to discover for yourself.

What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read?
