08/11 16:49Lon Sarver

Is this thing on?

08/11 16:50D.M. Atkins

Yes. Just setting up the virtual table and chairs. Did you remember the cookies?

08/11 16:50Lon Sarver

*begins setting out chairs*

08/11 16:50Lon Sarver

I thought the website handled cookies on its own.

08/11 16:52Lon Sarver

And Kaye O’Malley has cupcakes…

08/11 17:00D.M. Atkins

08/11 17:02D.M. Atkins

So, for anyone following, you are welcome to join the chat, ask questions, etc. Doing so also qualifies you for an extra entry in the ebook giveaway tomorrow.

08/11 17:02Natia_Pisces

So nice to virtually meet you!

08/11 17:03Alicia Cameron

Same here! *waves at guests*

08/11 17:03Lon Sarver

At long last, for the first time we meet again!

08/11 17:03Lon Sarver

Moo hoo ha ha

08/11 17:03Alicia Cameron

LOL now to plot world domination!

08/11 17:03Lon Sarver

Wait, no, not in editorial mode here. Sorry.

08/11 17:03Natia_Pisces

tee hee

08/11 17:04Lon Sarver

I try to save my most evil laughs for editorial commentary.

08/11 17:04D.M. Atkins

For anyone listening, Lon Sarver is one of our Senior Editors here. (And not just because of the AARP card.)

08/11 17:05Lon Sarver

For the record, I didn’t have any gray hair before meeting DM

08/11 17:05D.M. Atkins

I’m Dany, or D.M. Atkins, Publisher and Managing Editor.

08/11 17:05D.M. Atkins

And that’s cheating since it was 22 years ago.

08/11 17:06Lon Sarver

I am still correct. I accept no responsibility for erroneous conclusions others may draw.

08/11 17:07D.M. Atkins

So, Alicia, how does it feel to have six novels and 11 shorter works published (so far)?

08/11 17:08Alicia Cameron

I’m still sort of in disbelief. It’s been four years since the first one (also how have four years passed!), and every time I have another book come out, It still amazes me.

08/11 17:08Alicia Cameron

I always knew I wanted to write books, but it’s one of those things that you think you might never end up doing. I’ve done it and far more than I first thought!

08/11 17:09D.M. Atkins

So, not bored yet?

08/11 17:09D.M. Atkins

LOL

08/11 17:09Alicia Cameron

I am definitely not!

08/11 17:09Alicia Cameron

I still have some stories to tell, although not nearly as much time as I’d like to have for writing.

08/11 17:10D.M. Atkins

It was interesting to me coming back to Wren & Jere in the Inherent Gifts Series, after the whole of the Demoted series.

08/11 17:10D.M. Atkins

Did it change the way you saw them?

08/11 17:10Alicia Cameron

Same here! It was quite a shift. The dynamics between the couple are so different, and the dynamics of the world are very different as well.

08/11 17:11Alicia Cameron

The break was good–it’s nice to “spend time” with other characters. I think it’s easy to get stuck with Wren and Jere. It’s so easy to just let them be happy.

08/11 17:11Natia_Pisces

How does it feel to be inside the heads of so many different men all the time??

08/11 17:12Alicia Cameron

It is quite interesting! People always ask me why I never write women and I’m like… I don’t know, I just see things more easily through the eyes of my male characters.

08/11 17:12Alicia Cameron

What’s cool is that they all have such different personalities. I see different parts of myself reflected in all of them.

08/11 17:13D.M. Atkins

So tell us more about their personalities and how you develop them?

08/11 17:14Alicia Cameron

I usually start with dialogue, actually. I’ll write pages and pages of conversations between my characters, exploring what they’ll say, how they’ll say it, why they choose to speak (or not speak). When I first start with a new character, I spend a lot of time thinking about what they would value and how they would interact with others and what made them like that.

08/11 17:15Alicia Cameron

Basically I psychoanalyze them

08/11 17:15D.M. Atkins

Which you are qualified to do, right?

08/11 17:16Alicia Cameron

I am! In my other life, I am a therapist–soon to be an official psychologist once I get licensed.

08/11 17:16Alicia Cameron

It definitely adds another layer of introspection to what I write.

08/11 17:16Natia_Pisces

do the characters have distinct voices when you are writing?

08/11 17:16Lon Sarver

I have psych degrees as well; it really adds to how we can look at characters. And helps deal with stressed-out authors.

08/11 17:17Alicia Cameron

Yes, but in a way I can’t really explain. It’s kind of annoying to know how you think someone would sound but to be totally unable to describe it.

08/11 17:17Alicia Cameron

Everyone needs a little psychology in their lives!

08/11 17:17Natia_Pisces

sometimes when you are close to someone no explanations are necessary because you are so familiar…

08/11 17:18Alicia Cameron

I guess all my characters sort of sound like my voice in my head, but a little different. Like how it would be if you’re reading a book out loud and you’re not necessarily doing different voices, but changing the inflection.

08/11 17:18Natia_Pisces

I see.. very interesting

08/11 17:18D.M. Atkins

And writing makes you learn things about the real world you wouldn’t expect. I know you didn’t intend to write about politics at first, but I know both series has that.

08/11 17:19Lon Sarver

It sneaks up on eone.

08/11 17:19Alicia Cameron

I absolutely didn’t! But it just sort of happened–the worlds expanded from a close couple getting to know each other, to a few “outside world” challenges, and suddenly, both of them are dealing with international politics.

08/11 17:20D.M. Atkins

Yes, and we have had to get good at map making for all the different worlds our authors create.

08/11 17:20D.M. Atkins

Siol and Lon have worked on those with us as well.

08/11 17:20Alicia Cameron

The map for Inherent Cost is amazing! It’s so cool to see my little “world” on a map!

08/11 17:20Natia_Pisces

Did any real world politics influence the politics of Arona and the other states?

08/11 17:21Alicia Cameron

Largely the Arona politics were inspired by the Ebola virus outbreak last year. I just found it so fascinating (in an awful way). When I needed a little inspiration for the story, that was what was on my mind.

08/11 17:23D.M. Atkins

That comes across in book three. I also see your frustrations in dealing with social systems and bureaucracy.

08/11 17:23D.M. Atkins

Both your worlds in IG & Demoted series.

08/11 17:24Alicia Cameron

Absolutely. I think that’s something that occurs in almost all societies–we put structures into place to have some sort of organized society, but when it comes down to it, these same systems can really be a hindrance to progress. People need to be really active when they try to challenge these systems.

08/11 17:24D.M. Atkins

And in Inherent Cost, those systems get used against Jere and his family when they do try to change things.

08/11 17:25D.M. Atkins

In Demoted series., Cash and Sascha even go to gail.

08/11 17:25D.M. Atkins

jail.

08/11 17:26Alicia Cameron

Yes. It’s so easy for those in power to take advantage of it. Whether it’s an individual getting offended about something, someone wanting to go on a power trip, or someone trying to make a point, it’s a huge risk.

08/11 17:26D.M. Atkins

Do you want to share a little of Inherent Cost with us, let readers see?

08/11 17:26Alicia Cameron

Absolutely! What do we want first, plot or sex?

08/11 17:27D.M. Atkins

Both, but plot first?

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

All right, here it comes

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

Jere scowled, but he was running out of options. It always came down to this: he had to fit in, or he had to leave and abandon his family. Only one was an option, but he wasn’t going to take it lying down.

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

“I want to talk with Kieran about that SRA,” Jere decided.

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

Wren gave him a skeptical look. “Because you haven’t angered the higher-ups enough?”

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

“I don’t remember everything that it does, but I know it mandates that slaves are seen by real medical professionals. It provides some other protections as well. I was perfectly content to leave well enough alone, but if they’re going to interfere with both my slaves and my clinic, I want a more active role in this. I need it. There’s not much I can do, but I can do this.”

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

“I’m sure she’ll be happy to hear that,” Wren said, but the doubt on his face was obvious.

08/11 17:28Alicia Cameron

“I’m not doing this to make her happy. I want to keep treating slaves in the clinic. A lot of owners are already bringing them here because it’s inexpensive and convenient, and from the survey we did a few weeks ago, even the biggest assholes seem to like the fact that their slaves are up and ready to work a lot sooner. When I tell people that I’m being forced to stop, they’ll be just as angry. Do you really think we should lie down and take this?”

08/11 17:29Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 17:29D.M. Atkins

Yes, and so hard to stand up to wrongs when you have so much to lose.

08/11 17:30Natia_Pisces

this part made me worry for the safety of Isis and Wren!!

08/11 17:30Alicia Cameron

So, the SRA is the “Slavery Reformation Act.” Basically, a movement to treat slaves better and to mandate that they are seen by human medical doctors instead of veterinarians for their healthcare needs.

08/11 17:31Lon Sarver

Cool, thank you. One of the things I run into as an editor is helping achieve a balance between big-picture issues and personal issues for the characters. You get too big-picture, and it loses emotion. You focus down too much on the personal, and it loses context.

08/11 17:31Natia_Pisces

I have grown quite fond of Isis and her blunt snarky foul mouth

08/11 17:31Alicia Cameron

Exactly–they are putting themselves at a lot of risk because of their actions, but at the same time, Wren is at risk anyway just by being a slave in that state.

08/11 17:32Alicia Cameron

I like when the big-picture and personal issues align nicely. Unfortunately, not all the plot bunnies comply with that plan!

08/11 17:32Natia_Pisces

Damned Bunnies!

08/11 17:32Alicia Cameron

I love Isis she has been fun to write ever since I started!

08/11 17:32Natia_Pisces

where did the inspiration for isis come from?

08/11 17:34Alicia Cameron

To be honest, I had no idea–however, she did inspire the whole series! That was the first idea I had for the story and world as a whole–this abrasive teenage girl who finds herself being more or less adopted by two gay men who don’t have any idea of what to do with her. Then I realized that I needed some sort of explanation for these men and their lives, and then Inherent Gifts was born. Ironically, Isis doesn’t even come into the picture until the second book, Inherent Cost.

08/11 17:35D.M. Atkins

Wren and Jere get to be essential foster parents.

08/11 17:35Alicia Cameron

I know a lot of her specific behaviors and reactions have been inspired by kids I have worked with professionally–and the parents who have no idea what to do with them.

08/11 17:35Alicia Cameron

Yeah, they build up quite the non-traditional family. On one hand, they’re not that much older than her; on the other hand, they fill the parent role fairly well.

08/11 17:35Natia_Pisces

it certainly ads verisimilitude to the situation

08/11 17:36Natia_Pisces

I also have some experience with kids and i have seen many of Isis’s behavior patterns in hurt or abused children

08/11 17:36D.M. Atkins

And Wren’s in the early books.

08/11 17:37Alicia Cameron

Yes! Wren was quite different in the first book than he is now. He was young when it started, and definitely hadn’t had much in the way of a good life.

08/11 17:38Lon Sarver

And the psych experience no doubt helps in showing how they grow and heal from their abuse

08/11 17:38D.M. Atkins

Speaking of which, I’m going to definitely put out there that I’d love a spin off that tells us what happened to his brother.

08/11 17:38Lon Sarver

Killed in the great Lemming Stampede of ’06

08/11 17:38D.M. Atkins

*rolls eyes at Lon*

08/11 17:39Lon Sarver

*catches eyes, rolls them back*

08/11 17:39Alicia Cameron

Absolutely. People can recover–maybe not perfect, but who is? One thing I love about writing is that you can make these characters move a little faster than they probably would in real life.

08/11 17:39Alicia Cameron

hahahaha that’s the short version of the spin-off

08/11 17:39D.M. Atkins

*not dice*

08/11 17:39Lon Sarver

Well, no. Who could see with dice, silly?

08/11 17:39D.M. Atkins

So, maybe time for another teaser?

08/11 17:39Natia_Pisces

if only life would happen at the pace we prefer

08/11 17:39Alicia Cameron

There is most definitely a spin-off in the works, though!

08/11 17:40Natia_Pisces

oooo

08/11 17:40Natia_Pisces

tell us more!!

08/11 17:40Alicia Cameron

All right; more on the spin-off, then a teaser!

08/11 17:41Alicia Cameron

My plan for the spin-off is to explore Wren’s younger brother, who is also a slave. He gets involved in a rebel group, fighting the whole institution of gift-based slavery. It’s a more adventure/action sort of book, which will be a nice shift. Basically I want to blow things up in some scenes.

08/11 17:42D.M. Atkins

YEAH!

08/11 17:42Alicia Cameron

So, while we’ve got Wren and Jere fighting from a political and above board perspective, Wren’s younger brother will be disrupting, destroying, and having a lot more fun

08/11 17:43Lon Sarver

So, is it an erotic action piece?

08/11 17:43Alicia Cameron

And, while we’re excited about this, here’s a sexy scene from the beginning of Inherent Cost! Wren just smiled. He was getting quite skilled at the hurting part. He had been trained for years to make his masters feel good, but hurting someone had terrified him the first few times. The way Jere coaxed, begged, and came harder than ever when they played like that assured Wren he was on the right path. Lately, Wren had taken on quite the ambition of his own.

08/11 17:43Lon Sarver

Lots of explosions, and other bangs?

08/11 17:43Alicia Cameron

“Can you take a little heat elsewhere?” Wren asked, wiggling the fingers that were buried deep in Jere’s ass.

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

“Fuck yes,” Jere replied, an excited shudder going through his body. “Please?”

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

Wren laughed, working the heat on his other hand as well, and feeling quite proud as Jere squirmed and moaned for him. He loved that sound, and he loved knowing he was the one doing it.

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

“That is so amazing,” Jere mumbled, his body rocking almost in time with his words. “Get me all warmed up and then fuck me?”

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

Wren fully supported the plan. He toyed with Jere for a few more minutes, working him up and warming him up until Jere was rocking hard and heavy against his hand, begging Wren to fuck him already. Wren drew it out just a little longer, pushing Jere closer to the point of desperation, and then he granted Jere’s wishes, replacing his fingers with his cock and slipping into Jere without missing a beat.

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

It was strange, feeling his cock entering a space that he had just warmed above usual body temperature, if only by a few degrees. In theory, Wren could warm any part of his own body, but he hadn’t yet been able to master the trick of making his cock generate heat. At least, not more than it did naturally.

08/11 17:44Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 17:44D.M. Atkins

Wren certainly loves “playing with fire.”

08/11 17:45Alicia Cameron

Oops, got that teaser up right as you asked that! Erotic action piece sounds about right! Especially the banging.

08/11 17:45Lon Sarver

*ba-dump ching*

08/11 17:46Alicia Cameron

Yes–I’ll admit, I’m jealous of these gifts that my characters have! Between the ability to set fires and play with heat, and the psychic conversations they can have, it just sounds like so much more fun than real life!

08/11 17:47D.M. Atkins

Yes.

08/11 17:47D.M. Atkins

The use of what we would think of as “super powers” is an interesting part of the world.

08/11 17:47Natia_Pisces

does that mean that Wren’s brother is also likely to have a fire setting ability?

08/11 17:48Alicia Cameron

Agreed. I like to be able to go beyond the normal limits in the world and play with some fantasy elements.

08/11 17:48Natia_Pisces

So do Wren and Jere

08/11 17:48Alicia Cameron

He is not. The gifts aren’t really genetic… they really don’t know how a specific gift develops in any person

08/11 17:48D.M. Atkins

Does everyone in the IG world have some type of gift or are there “normals” by our sense of it?

08/11 17:50Alicia Cameron

There are some normal people, but it’s not really good to be normal. Essentially, most people either have a physical gift, which is an enhancement of a normal human ability, or a mental gift, which is something that normal humans can’t do. Then there are the people who have neither. In societies like Arona, where those with physical gifts are enslaved, those with no gift are just sort of ignored–they aren’t “good” enough to have a mental gift, but they’re not subjugated like those with physical gifts, either.

08/11 17:52Lon Sarver

I can see a gang of normals teaming up with abolitionists against the evil psychic masters

08/11 17:52D.M. Atkins

One of my favorite shorter works was the alternative timeline one you did called “Twisted Gifts” that shows a different take on what might have happened to Wren & Jere. It showed some possibilities for what else is going on in that world.

08/11 17:52Alicia Cameron

Yes! Even in more progressive societies where people aren’t enslaved, people without gifts are still sort of left behind.

08/11 17:53Alicia Cameron

I loved that one! I remember sitting on my couch and writing that in one giant burst of effort a few years ago.

08/11 17:53D.M. Atkins

And we’ll be seeing more of your shorts, this time from the Demoted, coming soon.

08/11 17:53Lon Sarver

Wild Mass Guessing: powers come from heretofore unknown alien parasites. Some folks don’t have powers because there are more humans than aliens.

08/11 17:54Alicia Cameron

Yes! I’m excited to see those shorts come to life. I loved the Demoted series.

08/11 17:54Alicia Cameron

Ha! Now I have a final ending for the IG world! Alien massacre!

08/11 17:55Natia_Pisces

what would you like to see happen next in the Demoted series?

08/11 17:55Natia_Pisces

Alien action and Sex… nice

08/11 17:56D.M. Atkins

I want to also give a called out to the design work of Soil na Tine and the art of Natalya Nesterova on Demoted series, and Siol entirely on the IG series.

is mostly finished for now (that was the least committed sentence ever), but in the future, it would be interesting to see how they tackle their new responsibilities and roles in politics

08/11 17:56Alicia Cameron

Yes! The art is always amazing.

08/11 17:58D.M. Atkins

It was fun to see Siol sketch out the logo for the Miller System and then the covers. She even had staff members posing as the figure to send Nat.

08/11 17:58D.M. Atkins

figures*

08/11 17:58Alicia Cameron

Really?! I didn’t know that

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

Here’s a throwback to the first Demoted book:

08/11 17:59D.M. Atkins

Yes, there are photos of staff members kneeling at each other feet! LOL

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

My master seems to do some sort of acrobatics with his tongue, and he’s putting pressure in just the right places, and sucking just enough, and he’s using his hands to stroke and touch around my cock and balls and ass and the more I think about it, the more I want him inside me.

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

He toys with me for a while, making me moan and squirm, and finally I feel myself starting to get close, wishing I could let go.

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

“Please, master,” I whimper, appalled by how pathetic and desperate I sound. Still, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

He pulls away, and it’s all I can do not to grab him by the hair and tug him back down. It’s really nice to not be hurt, though.

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

“I’m enjoying you,” he informs me, his voice all low and sultry and content.

08/11 17:59Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 17:59D.M. Atkins

Sascha and Wren couldn’t BE more different. LOL

08/11 18:00Alicia Cameron

LOL that must have been a fun day! It came out so well, though.

08/11 18:00D.M. Atkins

We’re a small but “hands on” team. *grins*

08/11 18:00Alicia Cameron

Exactly. I sometimes try to imagine crossovers of my worlds, and it is just hilarious. I think Sascha and Wren would just sit and stare at each other like “what are you even?”

08/11 18:00D.M. Atkins

LOL

08/11 18:01Natia_Pisces

Lol

08/11 18:01D.M. Atkins

Yeah, Wren would be surly about the whole thing.

08/11 18:01Natia_Pisces

maybe they could all have a four way

08/11 18:01Alicia Cameron

Wren and Cash would have too much in common. They would be a scary power team.

08/11 18:01D.M. Atkins

Though Sascha would probably just be turned on by him.

08/11 18:01Natia_Pisces

ooo competition across the series realites …

08/11 18:01D.M. Atkins

LOL

08/11 18:02Alicia Cameron

Pretty much! Sascha would be fascinated by the gifts. He’d want to study them, in a sort of creepy way.

08/11 18:02D.M. Atkins

Yeah. Researchers…

08/11 18:02D.M. Atkins

Does Wren’s brother have a name yet?

08/11 18:03Natia_Pisces

but I am sure Jere would not mind being explored as long as Wren could play along too

08/11 18:03Alicia Cameron

Yes! Wren’s brother’s name is Dalen. His gift… requires more research on my part, but it has something to do with manipulating electromagnetic fields

08/11 18:04Natia_Pisces

nice like magneto!

08/11 18:04D.M. Atkins

Oh, makes me wonder if the train derail had something to do with the resistance.

08/11 18:04Alicia Cameron

You know, a friend of mine is always trying to get me to get Wren & Jere into threesomes (or foursomes, or moresomes), but I’m not sure I can see Wren going through with it. Jere, yes! Wren’s still a little cautious. Maybe if he ever gets out of the slave state.

08/11 18:05D.M. Atkins

A free Wren would be a awesome.

08/11 18:05Lon Sarver

While supplies last!

08/11 18:05Natia_Pisces

that can be a very diverse power there are even different types of magnetism that can be manipulated other than ferromagnetism which is what is usually displayed in movies like the X-men. I am excited to see where you can take that power

08/11 18:05Alicia Cameron

That is definitely one of their techniques! Derailing trains, especially those moving slaves across borders. Then imagine all these people with psychic abilities escaping.

08/11 18:06Alicia Cameron

For the next Inherent Gifts book, we can hand out free Wrens!

08/11 18:06Lon Sarver

“Nice book, but what am I supposed to do with this bird?”

08/11 18:06Natia_Pisces

I am interested to see a free Wren building a fortune for himself in a free state.

08/11 18:06Alicia Cameron

Indeed! I have a lot of ideas of what to do with the magnetism idea, but want to research it a little more so I have some idea of what I’m talking about. Half the time I try to stick the wrong side of magnets to things.

08/11 18:08D.M. Atkins

Lon is a good person to chat with about science fiction and fantasy world building.

08/11 18:08Alicia Cameron

Speaking of free Wrens, here’s a teaser that hints at a maybe-sort of-one day-possibility of that happening!

08/11 18:08D.M. Atkins

Cool

08/11 18:08Alicia Cameron

“We’ve got our rates high, Jere. In the past three months, we have a fifty to eighty percent success rate. That’s higher than any other organization of our kind.”

08/11 18:08Alicia Cameron

Jere was glad that the organization had been improving their rates, but it wasn’t enough for him to get excited. He couldn’t help but glance over at the vet, her very presence highlighting just how many dangers were out there for him and his slaves. “That’s still awfully risky. I wouldn’t attempt surgery with a loss rate that high unless the only other option was certain death.”

08/11 18:09Alicia Cameron

“For some, staying is certain death,” Kieran reminded him. “We’ve got it down to an art. In all of those cases, where there was a loss, nothing came back to the master.”

08/11 18:09Alicia Cameron

“Why are you telling me this now?”

08/11 18:09Alicia Cameron

Kieran smiled. “With the elections and the worry about disease, patrol forces are being redistributed for public safety, attention is off the borders. That means a better chance of getting across the borders to freedom. Wren and Isis could go.”

08/11 18:09Alicia Cameron

Jere’s stomach clenched at the thought of either of them taking that risk. When the vet looked over at him, making eye contact for a moment, the feeling intensified. He waited for her to say something, to do something, but she looked away, focusing her attention on Wysocka instead. She had acted so superior in her clinic—in her town—but this was Jere’s home. Publicly engaging with him would only bring trouble to her. “They’d have to go separately, I’m assuming.”

08/11 18:09Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 18:09Lon Sarver

I loves me some world building. And they told me all that time playing D&D was wasted…

08/11 18:09D.M. Atkins

It’s fun to see Jere get riled up enough to actively fight the system.

08/11 18:10Alicia Cameron

World building is… a mediocre skill of mine? LOL characters is where I’m at. Nice to have a team behind me making sure my worlds are actually, you know, worldly.

08/11 18:10Natia_Pisces

I was totally pulling for them when Jere was righteously indignant

08/11 18:10Natia_Pisces

throughout the story

08/11 18:10Alicia Cameron

Yes! From the first book, where Jere was firmly committed to not caring and not getting involved, he has really progressed a lot.

08/11 18:11Natia_Pisces

I’m glad that Jere learned that ignoring problems does not make them go away

08/11 18:11D.M. Atkins

I could see Dalen finding out much later that the train he derailed had his brother on it…

08/11 18:11Natia_Pisces

was it challenging for you to showcase Jere and Wren’s relationship in the plot

08/11 18:12Natia_Pisces

?

08/11 18:12Alicia Cameron

Yes, it took a lot of repetition to remind Jere of that. He will hide his head in the sand until the sand becomes mud!

08/11 18:12Siol na Tine

Hi folks! Sorry I’m late: Traffic.

08/11 18:12Alicia Cameron

That would be an interesting connection! In my brain, they reunite somewhere down the line… how far down is up in the air, but I can see it happening.

08/11 18:13Alicia Cameron

Hi there! Traffic is awful. I battled it on the way here as well!

08/11 18:13Alicia Cameron

Inherent Cost was strangely the hardest book to showcase Jere and Wren’s relationship.

08/11 18:14Alicia Cameron

I think because their relationship was pretty strong and well-developed in my mind, it got easy to overlook at times. At one point, I had so many scenes where they weren’t even together! Poor boys missed each other.

08/11 18:14Siol na Tine

Like it becomes a given?

08/11 18:15Alicia Cameron

Exactly. By the end of the book, they’ve sort of settled into this married couple routine–complete with adopted child–and so it became a little more work to get them to notice each other over everything else that was occurring in their lives.

08/11 18:15D.M. Atkins

Welcome to married life. *smirks*

08/11 18:15Natia_Pisces

I hear that happens in real life too

08/11 18:16Alicia Cameron

familiarity… comfort… stagnation. Fortunately, there are life-threatening forces that keep them together!

08/11 18:16Siol na Tine

Well, fortunately for the story, anyway ;p

08/11 18:16Siol na Tine

Maybe not so fortunate for *them*

08/11 18:16Alicia Cameron

Right?!

08/11 18:17Alicia Cameron

Sometimes it takes a little kidnapping or threat of death to remind you just how much you love your partner.

08/11 18:17Natia_Pisces

especially in fiction

08/11 18:17D.M. Atkins

Well, it keeps the plot moving at least.

08/11 18:17Alicia Cameron

This would be the worst marriage counseling intervention ever.

08/11 18:18Natia_Pisces

lol

08/11 18:18D.M. Atkins

Yep

08/11 18:18Natia_Pisces

i am NOT a Professional everybody

08/11 18:18D.M. Atkins

Paltrek… is it me or is he starting to grow up?

08/11 18:19Natia_Pisces

i think he is

08/11 18:19Alicia Cameron

He is!

08/11 18:19D.M. Atkins

Maybe when his father passes he will be able to use his influence to change things.

08/11 18:19Natia_Pisces

he was even awake enought to save Wren after being passed out in the alley… thats growth right?

08/11 18:19Alicia Cameron

He and Jere are both being forced to realize that they can’t just hide from things. They actually care about real people, and that means you have to care about the world they are living in!

08/11 18:20Alicia Cameron

That would be an interesting change for him. I have a whole side story about him and Dane that will one day grow up and be a real book.

08/11 18:20Siol na Tine

I’m reminded of my Mom’s story of a college friend who overcame suicidal impulses because she got involved in the student rebellion and her survival drives kicked in…

08/11 18:20D.M. Atkins

His sister is so messed up it makes me wonder if she was abused by the dad…

08/11 18:20D.M. Atkins

yes, Paltrek/Dane book.

08/11 18:21Alicia Cameron

Survival comes up in the most surprising places!

08/11 18:21Alicia Cameron

Yeah, dad was pretty abusive. Imagine a world where someone can basically be a violent, sadistic abuser, and be perfectly applauded for it… and then imagine that person with children.

08/11 18:22Natia_Pisces

or maybe she is one of those people who are so privileged that they are never diagnosed with a disorder because no one is brave enough to question her behavior

08/11 18:22Alicia Cameron

I think Annika has some serious things wrong with her. She gets away with most of it because of who her family is, but she’s pretty out of control, even for this world.

08/11 18:23D.M. Atkins

Yes

08/11 18:24Natia_Pisces

Is it hard write broken characters like Annika

08/11 18:24Natia_Pisces

?

08/11 18:25Alicia Cameron

It can be. If I get too close to them, I try to make them human! If I were ever to try to write a book from her POV (which I won’t), I’d probably find something human and likeable about her. But keeping them at a distance allows me to be a little more callous with them.

08/11 18:25D.M. Atkins

Nods

08/11 18:25Natia_Pisces

understandable

08/11 18:25Lon Sarver

You’d end up writing Dexter with super powers?

08/11 18:25Natia_Pisces

lol

08/11 18:26Alicia Cameron

Pretty much!

08/11 18:26Siol na Tine

That would be kind of awesome, actually… but it would rather shift the genre…

08/11 18:26D.M. Atkins

Yep

08/11 18:26Alicia Cameron

Yeah, that would take a bit of a shift in my writing process.

08/11 18:26D.M. Atkins

Are you working on any other storylines at this point?

08/11 18:26Lon Sarver

And the sex scenes would be… well.

08/11 18:26Siol na Tine

Alicia doesn’t write horror per se. Well, horrible things, yes, but not horror in the classic sense

08/11 18:27Alicia Cameron

That’s a great way to put it! Horrifying, at times, but not horror.

08/11 18:27Alicia Cameron

I am not; I have the spin-off with Wren’s younger brother and the Paltrek/Dane story, but nothing else.

08/11 18:28D.M. Atkins

I can imagine you’ve been busy with the career move.

08/11 18:28Natia_Pisces

I would be happy to read either story.

08/11 18:28Alicia Cameron

Absolutely. I’m working like crazy to build up hours… but hopefully once I get licensed I can rest a little bit… and write more!

08/11 18:29Natia_Pisces

And hopefully, you will get all sorts of new inspiration from life experience.

08/11 18:29Alicia Cameron

I had a dream idea pop into my head the other night involving an asexual sub, but I’m not sure if that will go anywhere.

08/11 18:29Siol na Tine

Oh oh please!

08/11 18:29Siol na Tine

Please do!

08/11 18:30Alicia Cameron

Yes, life inspires a lot of my storylines. Its my own form of self-therapy

08/11 18:30Siol na Tine

Although what I’d love to see even more is an Ace Dom, who is a sadist, but not for sexual reasons…

08/11 18:30Siol na Tine

I’m the same way

08/11 18:30D.M. Atkins

We have another story, by Elizabeth Schechter, with an asexual main character.

08/11 18:30Siol na Tine

not for writing fiction (oh dear) but worldbuilding for RPGs, poetry, etc.

08/11 18:30Natia_Pisces

i was playing with the idea of an adult Isis as an asexual main character…

08/11 18:30Alicia Cameron

Ooh, that would be interesting

08/11 18:30D.M. Atkins

More demisexual in that he does play some with his love.

08/11 18:31D.M. Atkins

That’s the Rebel Mage series. I think you would like it a lot.

08/11 18:31Siol na Tine

Well Ace doesn’t mean never has sex… But that’s a discussion for another time, most likely

08/11 18:31Alicia Cameron

nice to know there is so much interest!

08/11 18:32Siol na Tine

We’re pretty enthusiastic about the whole QUILTBAG around here

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

In the mean time, here is an excerpt with some of that horror we were talking about!

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

Wren scanned the faces of his attackers. He knew a few of them; he had filed their paperwork at the clinic. “Please, just let me go home,” he repeated, trying to stay calm. “We can forget this ever happened. I can pay you. Nobody needs to know.”

08/11 18:32D.M. Atkins

We like having the ability to show so many diff rent relationships to sex and gender.

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

“We don’t want your fucking money. But we do want someone to know,” one of them replied. “Tell your fucking lackler-loving master just what can happen if he doesn’t stay in line. To you, to the little girl he keeps hidden in his house. He acts like you’re both some prized possessions, but everyone knows you’re just his whores. We want to remind him what you’re supposed to be used for.”

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

“Don’t do this,” Wren begged. “My master will be furious.”

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

“What are you going to do, report me to the police? Think they’ll believe your story, or do you think that they’ll believe that you were so lonely and sex-crazed after your master left town that you begged us all to take our turns with you?”

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

Wren said nothing. He closed his eyes, focused on suppressing his fire gift, and waited for it to be over. He couldn’t fight them; to lay hands on a free man was asking for whipping or worse, and he couldn’t escape them. He could contact someone with his mind gift, but it was even more dangerous. He’d rather take whatever they would do to him than risk exposing his other gift. He steeled himself as he felt his body twisted and turned in the air, and he tried not to make a sound as he felt hands tugging at his clothes. He reminded himself that they weren’t planning on killing him; they were going to rape him, probably beat him up, and then send him back to his master. He had lived through far worse. He just hoped he would be in a condition to wait for his master.

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

He wanted to be sick as he felt his shirt being peeled away, as hands made their way across his skin. The same spots that Jere could make feel so good made him feel dirty, violated.

08/11 18:32Alicia Cameron

“Tell us you want it,” one of the attackers ordered. “Beg us to fuck you and we might stop when we’re finished.”

08/11 18:33Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 18:33Lon Sarver

OK, now you all can talk.

08/11 18:33Natia_Pisces

I was on the edge of my seat when reading this portion

08/11 18:33D.M. Atkins

Yeah, walking in public without an escort.

08/11 18:33D.M. Atkins

He had forgotten what could happen.

08/11 18:34Alicia Cameron

Something so normal as going to the store can turn into a nightmare!

08/11 18:34Siol na Tine

I… really want him to just light the bastards all on fire. *Sigh*

08/11 18:34Alicia Cameron

Right! It’s so frustrating to see Wren with these great powers that he can’t use.

08/11 18:35Natia_Pisces

i like how Wren is so calculating

08/11 18:35Siol na Tine

… It does make me wonder, in a world like this, how do they prevent creative murder?

08/11 18:35D.M. Atkins

If he defended himself, it would be assault on a free person and they’d kill him.

08/11 18:35Alicia Cameron

Pretty much that. Brutal murder.

08/11 18:35D.M. Atkins

I think solving crimes would be very hard in a world with so many different abilities.

08/11 18:35Siol na Tine

If I understand Jere’s abilities correctly, he could just nonchalantly make his enemies have anyurisms or something…

08/11 18:36Alicia Cameron

In more progressive states, it’s just investigated like anything else–I mean, people in our world can kill in very creative ways, but they usually get caught.

08/11 18:36D.M. Atkins

Healers can just as easily kill.

08/11 18:36Alicia Cameron

And the detectives or whatever they have in the IG world will likely also have these gifts.

08/11 18:36Natia_Pisces

but Jere is too compassionate to kill a person

08/11 18:36Siol na Tine

No matter what they’ve done to Wren?

08/11 18:36D.M. Atkins

So I wonder if Jere would get called in to investigate an “unusual” death.

08/11 18:36Alicia Cameron

Yeah, Jere can be pretty scary when he wants to be. He’s so nonchalant about it, too. Oh, I can just stop your heart… no big deal!

08/11 18:37Siol na Tine

I’m also wondering if investigators have mental abilities that border on divination…

08/11 18:37Alicia Cameron

There are some of those! What’s great is that I can just keep adding new gifts. Anything imaginable… it could happen in this world.

08/11 18:38Lon Sarver

Hmmm. Are Wren’s powers limited to actual flame, or could he turn up the heat on a person internally, boiling them from within? Asking for a friend.

08/11 18:38Lon Sarver

It would do different things to the forensic evidence left behind.

08/11 18:39Siol na Tine

I thought we established in a t least one of the shorts that yes, Wren can head up a body

08/11 18:39Alicia Cameron

LOL that is a good question! He can more or less create heat around what he touches. He is immune to his own fire for the most part, so he can create a fireball in his hand and not burn, even though he is in contact with it. If he were to burn someone, he’d do it either with an external fire, or he could touch them and ignite them.

08/11 18:39Siol na Tine

I remember a cover with rain…

08/11 18:40Lon Sarver

What is the fireball in his hand burning for fuel?

08/11 18:40Alicia Cameron

Yes! Basically his body can generate enough heat to ignite.

08/11 18:40Lon Sarver

Sorry, getting para-science geeky…

08/11 18:40Alicia Cameron

Psychic energy?

08/11 18:41Alicia Cameron

That is a good question. At first I just had him igniting “things,” but over time, he’s able to make his own fire out of nowhere. It does sort of tire him out to do it, so maybe it is some of his own energy.

08/11 18:42Lon Sarver

It’s just one of those things I wonder about, because I get creative inspirations from chasing down the hows and whys.

08/11 18:42Lon Sarver

And the secondary effects.

08/11 18:43Siol na Tine

Second law of thermodynamics not so much ;p

08/11 18:43Alicia Cameron

It does raise some interesting questions. Like, if Jere and Wren ended up stranded in the Arctic, could Wren just keep them warm forever?

08/11 18:43Natia_Pisces

heating lightning or creating light could be a cool additional fire related power

08/11 18:43Lon Sarver

Well, only until they melt through the ice and drowned.

08/11 18:43Lon Sarver

“Damn it, Wren, how many igloos do we have to build before you get the heat levels right?”

08/11 18:44Alicia Cameron

Hahaha, that would be a problem!

08/11 18:44D.M. Atkins

They almost drowned because it melted in their sleep.

08/11 18:44Lon Sarver

Hot sex can be life threatening, under the right conditions.

08/11 18:44Natia_Pisces

or they could have hot underwater sex

08/11 18:45D.M. Atkins

Note to Jere: Don’t take Wren skying.

08/11 18:45Alicia Cameron

That would end very poorly! Fortunately, Jere can heal it

08/11 18:45Siol na Tine

My sister has done Igloo camping. Apparently, they do actually get really warm inside, and the body heat melts the walls down the sides so the holes all stop up. You have to be careful to make the opening big enough to get back out the next morning!

08/11 18:45Natia_Pisces

lol

08/11 18:45Alicia Cameron

That sounds so fun!

08/11 18:46Alicia Cameron

Here’s a little sample of how Wren usually uses his firesetting gift…

08/11 18:46Natia_Pisces

i can imagine the steam coming from the igloo now

08/11 18:46Siol na Tine

I’m sure y’all needed to know that…

08/11 18:46D.M. Atkins

I would definitely see Dalen trying to recruit Wren for the resistence.

08/11 18:46Alicia Cameron

Wren smiled a dangerous smile. Sometimes he did enjoy hurting Jere, just a little. “From the looks of it, you like a little burn.”

08/11 18:46Alicia Cameron

He kept flitting around Jere’s body, kissing here, biting there, almost burning in other places. By the time he was satisfied, Jere was jumping and gasping with every touch, uncertain whether it was going to be sensual or burning hot, a light caress or a stinging scratch. Red patches covered Jere’s skin, and Wren felt the heat growing between them as Jere gasped in pleasure.

08/11 18:46Alicia Cameron

Wren pulled Jere into the position he wanted him, leaned back against the headboard, his hips angled in the exact right direction, his cock hard and ready. Wren straddled him, spreading his legs around Jere and easing down, brushing his ass against Jere’s cock.

08/11 18:46Alicia Cameron

“Hmm, would this be something you’d like?” Wren asked, feigning innocence. “Would you like to fuck me? I don’t know if you’ve earned it, yet.”

08/11 18:47Alicia Cameron

Jere moaned, reaching up to grab Wren’s hips. Wren was a little surprised by the move, but Jere just held him and let his hands trail along Wren’s skin.

08/11 18:47Alicia Cameron

(end)

08/11 18:47Siol na Tine

d’awww

08/11 18:48Natia_Pisces

My husband wants to Know Can Wren also absorb radiation with his heat ability

08/11 18:48Natia_Pisces

?

08/11 18:49Lon Sarver

“Dammit, Jim, I’m a psychologist, not a physicist!”

08/11 18:49Natia_Pisces

LOL

08/11 18:50Siol na Tine

Dangit, now I’m picturing some supervillian trapping Jere in a big blog of ice, so that Wren has to rescue him by melting it all down, ’cause the supervillian assumed Ice was Wren’s weakness

08/11 18:50Siol na Tine

when… uh… nope.

08/11 18:50Alicia Cameron

Good question! He can absorb heat–there’s a scene where he ends up putting out a fire, basically absorbing that fire energy

08/11 18:50Siol na Tine

Ooh, neat!

08/11 18:51Lon Sarver

He’s able to siphon the plogiston from the luminiferous ether.

08/11 18:51Siol na Tine

*Swats Lon*

08/11 18:51Alicia Cameron

That’s exactly how it happens!

08/11 18:51D.M. Atkins

I’d roll my eyes again at Lon but that was gross last time.

08/11 18:51Alicia Cameron

Plus they’re probably dirty from all the passing back and forth

08/11 18:52Siol na Tine

*laugh*

08/11 18:52D.M. Atkins

eww

08/11 18:52Lon Sarver

We have cats.

08/11 18:52Lon Sarver

Makes the eye sockets itchy.

08/11 18:52D.M. Atkins

Yikes

08/11 18:52Siol na Tine

Good to know that y’all are exactly the same whether I’m here or not ;p

08/11 18:52D.M. Atkins

Um, maybe I should pull us back to the discussion?

08/11 18:53D.M. Atkins

So, you have 9 minutes left. Any back story you’d like to share with us.

08/11 18:53Siol na Tine

So… I kinda have a question, actually.

08/11 18:53Alicia Cameron

Question!

08/11 18:53Alicia Cameron

I’ve got more question answers than backstory at the moment.

08/11 18:54Siol na Tine

I get that it’s a problem that Wren has a mental ability

08/11 18:54Siol na Tine

But I don’t really get why?

08/11 18:54Siol na Tine

Woudln’t them being aware of the firestarting improve his lot?

08/11 18:55Siol na Tine

Obviously it doesn’t make the physical ability go away…

08/11 18:55Lon Sarver

He’d get in trouble for hogging too many alien parasites.

08/11 18:56Alicia Cameron

It has to do with the way the laws in Arona are worded. They specifically state that anyone *with* a physical ability is a slave–regardless of anything else. So Wren, no matter what, is a slave in Arona law. This is bad enough, but very, very few people have more than one gift. People would be very interested in finding out WHY he has both. Is it a brain abnormality? Can they study a subject and figure it out? And who better to experiment on than a slave.

08/11 18:56Natia_Pisces

How many powers can people have?

08/11 18:56Siol na Tine

So they’re worried that the gov’t will demand him for disection.. or vivisection?

08/11 18:57D.M. Atkins

Also they might realise he killed his former master…

08/11 18:57Lon Sarver

Normally, only one. But if you roll a 98-00 in chracter creation…

08/11 18:57Alicia Cameron

I think the rates I mentioned in the first book were like one in a million or so? Wren could be very valuable. Pretty much!

08/11 18:57Alicia Cameron

Hahaha yes! Rare is valuable. Stealable. Dissectable.

08/11 18:57Alicia Cameron

Yes, there’s that, too. So easy to forget that Wren is a bit of a murderer.

08/11 18:58Siol na Tine

Self defense is not murder

08/11 18:58D.M. Atkins

I would consider it self defense, but the law regarding slaves wouldn’t consider that.

08/11 18:58D.M. Atkins

Last teaser?

08/11 18:58Siol na Tine

Right

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

Exactly.

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

Yes! Last teaser time–showing the darker side of Wren.

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

Jere waited for his cue. “May I?” he asked, finally.

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

“Crawl.”

08/11 18:58Natia_Pisces

….anticpation….

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

Jere’s breath caught at the casual command; Wren had been picking a speck of dirt off of his skin, but when he spoke, he flicked his eyes up to meet Jere’s. They were cold, quiet, and hard. It took Jere a minute to realize what he was even supposed to do, but when he did, he obeyed, crawling across the bed on his hands and knees.

08/11 18:58Alicia Cameron

Wren smiled as Jere reached him, and Jere was encouraged enough to place his hands lightly over the injured skin and heal it, making it flawlessly smooth in just seconds.

08/11 18:59Alicia Cameron

“Good boy,” Wren said, reaching out and giving Jere a pat on the head. It could have been demeaning, but Jere craned his head, closing his eyes slightly as he tried to stay in contact.
