Birthday Promises

by D.M. Atkins

Today is my birthday! I have travelled around the sun on this planet fifty times.

Other folks make “New Year’s Resolutions.” I make birthday promises to myself.

In February of 2009, I started working on the business model for a new kind of publishing. My partner registered the domain name ForbiddenFiction.com as one of my birthday presents.

In February 2010, I sort of did a “what have I been waiting for” birthday – dyed my hair purple (my favorite color) and changed my first name (the old one never suited me). Rylan Hunter and I outlined the original plan for ForbiddenFiction.com.

In February 2011, we launched the early version of this site and sent out the first invitations to some of my favorite authors – two of whom, Lynn Kelling and J.A. Jaken, responded by sending us the first novels in our collection.

February is also Rylan Hunter’s birthday. Yes, two of the five staff members are Aquarian. Trust me, it makes sense. We like to do things differently. Last year, Rylan and I promised each other to work our arses off and have our first publications out by our next birthdays.

This year, we launched our first three ebooks midway between our two birthdays. See our New Releases page for The Band Played On by Theda Black, Milk by Claryssa Berg, and The Woods In Winter by Madeleine Swann. We expect to have the first novels (Deliver Us by Lynn Kelling & Exodus, Volume 1 of The House of Silence by J.A. Jaken) launched within the next month.

This year, my birthday promise to myself (and Rylan) is to have the site itself rebuilt and serializing fiction before our next birthdays.

So Happy Birthday, ForbiddenFiction.com, Rylan and me!

Oh, it was so fun seeing you as our first official sales! When you get your homework done and read the stories, come to their story pages and leave reviews. There are both places to rate the story and to comment.

I am still so very happy to be working with you. The trust you have placed in us is heartwarming and has certainly inspired us to do our best for you as well. I am hoping very soon to have your first ebook out and not long after that, your first print versions. It should be a very exciting year for us all.

Happy Birthday to someone who’s been a part of my life for a nice chunk of time now. I have a feeling this last birthday promise will happen much earlier than our birthdays. There’s no stopping us now…. 🙂

Yes, I’m hoping it happens much sooner than too. I do think that given all the crap the rest of the world threw at us last year, we were amazing to have managed to keep the promises made. Now, if the universe will just be a bit more cooperative this year…

Osiris, thank you. And I’m glad your writing will be part of this years goals. You have already had such an important impact on the way we do things. Now we get to help push your writing the way you’ve pushed us to do our best! To a year of promise!

And I have to say, your birthday promises seem to be far more productive than any resolutions I’ve ever made. Cheers and best wishes for the year 🙂

I’m one of those people who won’t promise what I don’t believe can be done. I prefer the gift of accomplishment. And this means so much more because of the trust so many amazing writers have put in us. We can’t wait to share more of their work. Thanks!
